Sineu in Mallorca: to the market, and what else?

“Few signs of tourism”, I read about Sineu, Mallorca in advance. Except on Wednesday. Because then the whole island seems to be in Sineu for the market. Rightly so, but visit the town on another day too, because then you can really enjoy the maze streets and restaurants. And! In Sineu, you will find the best coffee in Mallorca.

Sineu is almost in the middle of Mallorca. In the 13th century, the town was the capital of the island. Those days are long gone. On non-Wednesdays, it is quiet in the streets but, mainly in summer, busy at the outdoor cafes. Not too crowded, but lively. Just right.

The highlight of Sineu is the weekly market. The town has only a few places of interest: the Santa Maria church, the Concepció monastery, and the town hall. You actually walk past it automatically when you explore Sineu.

I like Sineu in Mallorca because it’s small, friendly, and cozy. It is a small maze of streets lined with shops for necessities (a bakery, a butcher, etc.), a few boutiques, home decor, and gift shops. Not enough for an extensive shopping session, but just enough to feel like you’ve deserved that coffee break. Come on market day (or go to Palma) if you want to shop.

The market of Sineu, Mallorca

For more than 700 years, Sineu has hosted a market every Wednesday between 8 am and 1 pm. Don’t be too strict with the schedule – it’s still Spain, after all. In the fall, I notice that the market only comes alive from 9 am. With bad weather, many market vendors don’t bother to show up. Maybe it’s different in the summer? Because in the summer months, literally, busloads of tourists come to the Sineu market. Even at the end of October, tourist buses still come to take over the town for a few hours.

So come on time. Hopefully, you can avoid the real crowds. Plus, you can still park close to the Sineu market early in the day. Parking on the street is free (here, for example), and on market days, there are also parking attendants at the vacant lot along the road.

The market spreads all over Sineu: from the square, the market winds up and down the hill into the narrow streets. Souvenirs, groceries, leather bags, knick-knacks, plants, hams, cheeses, candy, Mallorcan dogs, chickens, peacocks, birds… You can buy just about anything while zigzagging through the streets.

Around the Plaça es Fossar, you will find a wide choice of cafes and restaurants. Market days guarantee great people-watching. For a good meal, I’d dive a little deeper into Sineu. Now Sineu is very small, so you don’t have to walk very far.

Brewery Món: beer!

I am a fan of Món, a small brewery. You can already have a beer in the morning, but luckily it is open until late in the evening. Inside you can play a game of table football. But of course, you come to try out the different Món beers. I am a fan of the Rossa.

Sa Mola 13: coffee cafe

Sa Mola 13 is just outside the center of Sineu and is where the international inhabitants of Mallorca like to come together. It’s a hip coffee cafe, upstairs you can buy cycling bikes. There is also a good chance that a group of cyclists is taking a breather here. I always end up at Sa Mola 13 on market days. It’s the best coffee I’ve found in Mallorca in two months. Have a piece of almond pastry with it, or try a semi-healthy breakfast or lunch. The service staff is very helpful and friendly. There is a flea market on the square on Saturdays in front of the door.

Celler restaurants: dining in a wine cellar

You can eat out in a celler restaurant in various places in Mallorca. Those are former wine cellars. You can still see the old glory in most of them: you dine between colossal wine barrels. For example, in Sineu, you can go to Celler es Grop and Celler Can Font. The menu often features traditional, hearty meals.

Can Pep: burgers and pizza

In the street behind the church is Can Pep, a relatively new restaurant with a fairly straightforward menu. Burgers and pizzas. And they also have vegetarian options. You don’t come here to dine for hours, but what they do, they do well.

Castro’s: a big dine out

Castro’s has an outside space to linger endlessly when the weather is nice. But also on colder days, you should definitely not skip Castro’s restaurant in Sineu. Inside it is modernly furnished, and there is a casual atmosphere. You order several dishes with your dinner partners to share. And they are all beautiful and delicious. Enjoy your meal!

Hotels in Sineu

I stayed in Montuïri myself, but Sineu seems like a good choice for a stay if you want some life to the party (plenty of restaurants and outdoor cafes within walking distance) but still want a bit of authentic Mallorca. Have a look at:
