In the south of Mallorca are the beaches Es Trenc, Es Carbó, Es Cargol and Cala Llombards. You will definitely end up there at least once during your vacation. But don’t miss the sights around the town of Ses Salines. Discover how salt is extracted, visit the lighthouse, and enjoy the rugged coastline.

About Ses Salines, Mallorca

Ses Salines in Mallorca was already founded in the 13th century. At the moment, Ses Salines is most famous for its salt production. It’s only a tiny town with a population below 5.000 people. But Ses Salines is also a municipality in Mallorca. So the area also offers beaches and a few tourist attractions, but the town itself is definitely not on the tourist trail. So let’s explore!

Lighthouse Far des Cap Salines

The Far des Cap Salines lighthouse is located at the southernmost tip of Mallorca. Unfortunately, you can’t visit it: there is a fence around it. But you can park your car along the road and walk along the rocky coast here – maybe pick a less rainy day than I did! If you don’t have any hiking plans, it’s better to skip this place as the lighthouse of Ses Salines itself is not very special.

Visit the salt flats: Salines des Trenc

The Ses Salines and Colonia Sant Jordi area are ideal for salt production. At Salines des Trenc, you can see how it’s produced, which makes you immediately understand why the salt from Salines des Trenc has a higher price tag than the salt from the supermarket. It is, in fact, quite a labor-intensive process to extract the salt, especially because they only extract ecological salt here. This means, for example, that the salt is only washed with saltwater. Other salts, often table salt, are usually washed with chemicals. You can, of course, also buy salt in the shop at Salines des Trenc.

I think a tour of the salt flats of Ses Salines in Mallorca is definitely worth it. The guide runs you through the entire process, you see the whole site, and you can (from March to September) see how the salt is harvested with your own eyes. In the summer months, twenty people harvest the top salt layer twice a day; it’s a layer that looks like ice and contains much more minerals than ordinary salt.

Fun fact: the salt mountains in the protected nature park sometimes serve as ‘snowy’ mountains for photoshoots. There are sometimes photoshoots here in the summer with models in winter clothes. It’s all fake people!

The cactus farm of Ses Salines

A cactus farm? Well, why not?! Toni Moreno’s cactus farm grows no fewer than 500 species of cacti. Unfortunately, they don’t offer tours, but you can take a look and buy a cactus. Please check the opening times on the site to avoid disappointment.

Visit Botanicactus in Ses Salines

At the Botanicactus, you wander among cacti for an hour or so. It is a botanical garden full of cacti and other flowers and plants. It is wise to call in advance and inquire about the opening times. The entrance is € 10.50, small children can enter for free.

Gran Café & Restaurant Cassai

Without a doubt, the most popular eating spot in Ses Salines in Mallorca is Cassai. And rightly so: it looks so beautiful. The decor is gorgeous. You will find just about everything you need on the menu: from salads to fish dishes and from pasta to tapas. But, of course, it’s best to make a reservation for dinner in the high season. The Cassai Beach House is located in Sant Jordi, and the owners also own a few hotels in the area.
