Alcúdia in Mallorca is a favorite holiday destination for sun-sea-beach lovers. No wonder: there are no less than 10 kilometers of sandy beach. A day trip to Alcúdia is a good idea if you stay in a different town in Mallorca. Combine the beach with visiting Alcúdia’s old town and the colorful sculpture garden.

A full-day schedule with things to do in Alcúdia

My first encounter with Alcúdia is in the middle of the night when I arrive by boat from Barcelona. That’s not a very good first impression, so I take another day during my stay in Mallorca to explore Alcúdia.

Alcúdia consists of the city, and the beach and port area: Port d’Alcúdia. They are only a kilometer apart, so you can easily visit them both in a day. Do you have a whole day to spare? Start with Museo Sa Bassa, then enter the old town of Alcúdia and finish your day in Port de Alcúdia.

Museo Sa Bassa Blanca: colorful sculpture garden

The route to Museo Sa Bassa Blanca in Alcúdia is questionable, to say the least, maybe even challenging. You drive your car (rent yours at Sunny Cars or EasyTerra) on an endless sandy road through the woods. A crazy bend here and there, potholes everywhere. We feel doubtful, but we persevere, and I am very happy we do. What a fantastic place this is! Both for the die-hard art lover and the casual visitor – and even for children.

You have three ticket options: just the garden, the garden and galleries, or also a guided tour of the house. I go for the middle option. The galleries are spread over the site. So during my walk through the beautiful sculpture garden, I get to visit them all. And before you think of bronze or concrete statues of naked men and women: you’re mistaken. Instead, it’s a colorful collection of a golden Ken and Barbie, a meters-high octopus, a mini Stonehenge, and more.

In one of the galleries is an exhibition with historical children’s portraits. The short texts are worth reading: sometimes I read more about the painter, sometimes more about the child depicted. In another gallery, the focus is on modern art. There is actually something for everyone to admire in the Museo Sa Bassa Blanca.

In the late season, it is not necessary to buy a ticket in advance; in the high season, I’m not sure. So don’t take the risk and book your tickets here. And always check the opening times.

Historic Center of Alcúdia

My visit to the historic center of Alcúdia is a bit of a letdown because of the rain. But between the raindrops, I can still see the town’s charm. The city walls are still fully preserved and cut you off from the busy ring road around the city. We park for free slightly outside the city walls (Google Maps location) and walk into the town through the beautiful gate Porta del Moll. What an entrance! You can also expect the old city gates at the other entries.

Narrow alleys with well-maintained houses, many lovely shops, and restaurants: it’s a good place to grab a bite and a drink – on a sunny day! There is a market in Alcúdia on Tuesdays and Sundays. Those are the busiest days in the city.

Be sure to take a look at the enormous church, the Església de Sant Jaume d’Alcúdia. The church is the main sight of Alcúdia. You can visit the church for free, and the small museum costs one euro per person. Nearby are the Ruines Romanes de Pollentia (Google Maps location): an archaeological site.

To the beach! Port d’Alcudia

The beach of Alcúdia is known as the whitest beach in Mallorca. Unfortunately, the beach is not in optimal condition due to various rain showers in the late season, but it is very long. In theory, you can walk all the way to the beach of C’an Picafort. In practice, I prefer to look for a nice beach bar. It strikes me that the waterfront has many Italian restaurants. I end up at Negre (Google Maps location), where they have a vast menu. That’s usually not a good sign, but it works out well. Also thanks to the friendly, caring service and the patio heaters. You can easily spend a few hours here.

Be sure to take a walk in the direction of the harbor. Alcúdia was once a fishing town, and you can still see some fishing activity. But there are certainly chic yachts too. In the summer months, there is also a market in the harbor.

You can park for free in Port d’Alcúdia here.

Water activities in Alcúdia

With its location right on the sea and the fine beach, it is logical that many water sports activities are offered on the boulevard of Port d’Alcúdia. Jet skiing, banana boat, anyone? Or go dolphin spotting by boat or have lunch on a catamaran as you sail past the shoreline. Sounds lovely! This could definitely be your highlight of your visit to Alcúdia in Mallorca.

Hotels in Alcúdia and Port d’Alcúdia

Are you still looking for a good hotel in Alcúdia or Port d’Alcúdia? There are plenty! The rooms at Hotel Can Mostatxins are very nice, and there is a hot tub! And ARA Alcudia has a wonderfully relaxed vibe.
